22. oktobar School in Surčin
March 25, 2026.
Sometimes, just a few hours, a pair of gloves, and a big-hearted team are enough to transform a schoolyard into a true green oasis.
On Wednesday, March 25, the Discover Serbia team had the honor of bringing new energy to the courtyard of the “22. oktobar” elementary school in Surčin, together with volunteers from Belgrade Airport (VINCI Airports).
This was not just another workday – it was a celebration of friendship and continuity. In fact, this is the fourth joint initiative we have carried out with the employees of this company over the past year. When cooperation turns into tradition, the results are always visible and long-lasting.

A new glow for the schoolyard
The main goal was to provide children with a more beautiful and functional outdoor space. Our hardworking volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work:
-
Furniture renovation: Every bench in the courtyard was given a new look. We replaced all worn-out and broken boards and then carefully painted all the benches, making them ready for the upcoming spring breaks.
-
Green belt: Nature is always our focus. We planted as many as 150 Cherry Laurel seedlings and 100 Thuja seedlings, which will provide natural shade and cleaner air for future generations in the years to come.
We were particularly delighted by the participation of sixth-grade students. They joined in the planting, learning firsthand the importance of caring for their immediate environment. There is no better lesson than one learned through work and a shared contribution to the community.
From shovels to robots: Workshops for the youngest
While the older students helped in the courtyard, a truly creative atmosphere reigned inside the school. For the students of all four first-grade classes, we organized a series of educational workshops that combined ecology with the technology of the future:
-
Lego robotics [Lego recycling]: Through play and construction, first-graders learned how technology can be used to preserve the planet.
-
Ecological workshop: We discussed the importance of recycling and how every individual can contribute to a cleaner world through small steps.
-
Electronics workshop: The first encounters with the basics of electronics were met with great interest and curious looks from the youngest students.
More than just work – a community in motion
This initiative in Surčin serves as a reminder of what can be achieved when socially responsible companies, civil society organizations, and the local community join forces. Tired but fulfilled, we left Surčin leaving behind 250 new seedlings, restored benches, and, most importantly, children who witnessed that through effort and unity, the world around us can truly be improved.
Thank you to the Belgrade Airport team for their inexhaustible energy and the trust that has lasted for four consecutive initiatives. Moving forward to new green victories!
