Deliblatska Sands

Deliblato Sands, also known as the European Sahara, is the largest continental sand area in Europe and home to many rare species, from desert ants to the saker falcon. In this very place, with expert support from Vojvodinašume, Discover Serbia organized a day dedicated to restoring the biodiversity of this unique reserve, joined by volunteers from Microsoft.

Three teams, three tasks

Upon arrival, volunteers were immediately divided into three groups, each with its own task for the day.

The first team took on building birdhouses, carefully assembling every detail so that future inhabitants would have a safe home in the sand area. The second team focused on insect hotels, structures less known to the general public, but extremely important for the survival of small inhabitants of this ecosystem, including desert ants and other rare species that find one of their last habitats in Serbia here. The third team cleared one of the walking paths through the sand area, opening a passage that visitors and experts monitoring the state of this reserve will be able to use in the future.

Expertise behind every detail

Every segment of the action was carried out under the guidance of Vojvodinašume, whose experience and knowledge of the terrain ensured that everything created was in line with the actual needs of the sand area. Thanks to this cooperation, the birdhouses, insect hotels, and path are not just a symbolic gesture, but a concrete contribution to the preservation of one of Serbia’s most valuable natural assets.
