VINCI ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION DAY – NEW FOREST AS A GIFT TO BELGRADE

5,000 new trees

In the spirit of sustainable development and genuine care for nature, Belgrade Airport, a member of the VINCI Airports group, marked September 22 – VINCI Environment Protection Day, with a major reforestation action in the Petrovčić settlement, in the municipality of Surčin.
The planting action was attended and actively participated in by Belgrade Airport General Director Šivoan Rem, Sustainable Development Director Tatjana Jovančević, Environmental Protection Manager Bojana Kalanović, who symbolically planted the first trees of the new forest.
Airport employees planted 300 pedunculate oak and sycamore maple trees, and will plant another 4,700 seedlings in the coming weeks. Thus, a total of 5,000 trees will form a new forest, a gift from Belgrade Airport to the community and nature.

The forest that changes everything: ecological significance of planting

The new forest in Surčin will consist of eight native tree species: pedunculate oak, common ash, silver linden, common hornbeam, narrow-leaved ash, wild cherry, Turkey oak, and sycamore maple. These species together form a stable, diverse, and climate-resilient ecosystem, similar to the natural forest communities that once covered the Belgrade plains area. The new forest will form a stable and functional ecosystem that will improve air quality, protect the area from wind erosion and floods, provide habitat for numerous animal species, and restore natural balance.
Over the next decade, the new forest will: sequester between 25 and 30 tons of CO₂, absorb more than 2,000,000 liters of water, filter 50–70 kg of harmful particles from the air, provide habitat for numerous species of birds, insects, and fungi.

Nature Needs More Teams Like This

Belgrade Airport continuously invests in projects that contribute to environmental protection, carbon dioxide emission reduction, and biodiversity conservation. Through its example, it demonstrates that socially responsible business is not just part of business strategy, but an expression of respect for the community and nature.

This action represents a continuation of support for the “Lungs of Belgrade” project, which the Discover Serbia organization implements with the goal of creating reforestation of 250 hectares and strengthening awareness about the importance of ecosystem conservation in urban environments.
