The Discover Serbia team, with the support of 40 volunteers from the GoGreen team, has successfully carried out another environmental action within the “Lungs of Belgrade” initiative. Through this afforestation action, we are working together to create greener urban spaces and contribute to cleaner and healthier air in Belgrade. The dedication and enthusiasm of the volunteers have once again demonstrated how much joint efforts can contribute to environmental protection and improving the quality of life in our city.

Before the planting itself began, our team thoroughly prepared the terrain by shallow digging of holes, creating optimal conditions for the rooting and growth of new seedlings. This step is essential to ensure that the planted plants have a stable and healthy start.

During the action, we planted English oak, one of the most valued and long-lived native tree species in Serbia. This impressive species is characterized by an extremely slow fertilization process, which lasts about 160 years, but in return provides a long-lasting and stable contribution to the forest ecosystem. Thanks to its resilience and ecological value, English oak plays a key role in preserving biodiversity and improving air quality.

In addition to oak, container seedlings of sycamore maple were also planted in this area, which come with a root ball enriched with nutrients and substrate. This method of planting allows young plants to adapt more quickly to the new environment, increases their survival rate and improves the chances for successful forest development. By using high-quality seedlings and applying modern afforestation methods, we ensure the long-term sustainability of this green space and contribute to a healthier ecosystem for future generations.

This afforestation phase is part of a broader ecological initiative that, in addition to planting trees, includes the construction of supporting infrastructure such as a health trail and irrigation wells. These projects will provide optimal conditions for the development of young trees and the long-term stability of the ecosystem in Surčin.

The Discover Serbia team will continue to take care of the seedlings through regular maintenance and protection, in order to ensure their growth and longevity. Cooperation with the GoGreen team further supports our goal of creating new green areas, which reduce pollution, improve air quality and improve the environment of Belgrade.

The “Lungs of Belgrade” initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of afforestation and preservation of green areas for a healthier life in urban environments. Through environmental actions like this one, carried out in cooperation with the GoGreen team, we are building a sustainable future – not only for us, but also for future generations. This forest is not only a new source of oxygen, but also a joint investment in a better quality and greener Belgrade.
