DAY FOR CICIBAN

The “Day for Ciciban” action was held at the Belgrade kindergarten “Ciciban”, organized by the Discover Serbia association. Forestry engineers and our volunteers, together with the kindergarten children and their parents, greened and beautified the space where they spend their time.

After an educational workshop about the importance of forests and plants for humans and the entire planet, the children, with the help of adults, planted 40 thuja seedlings in their kindergarten yard, as well as two ash tree seedlings. In the city center, amid gray asphalt, we created a small, green oasis for enjoyment and a better and healthier environment for everyone. Along with education about planting and plant care methods, 30 decorative silver spruce seedlings were also distributed, so that each child could plant “their” tree wherever they wished and thus learn and get accustomed to caring for the environment and its preservation. After a brief refreshment and relaxation from the hard work, our volunteers continued with cleaning “Šumice” park located in the immediate vicinity of the kindergarten. Dozens of kilograms of various waste were collected and a large area of the park was cleaned.

The action lasted until evening hours, but the satisfaction and good feeling from doing something good for our planet and for ourselves will last much, much longer.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

We are witnesses to urban life in which we dedicate the least time to those who need attention the most – children. We wonder why environmental awareness in our country is not even close to the level of European Union countries, yet we fail to see that ecological educational workshops are mainly directed toward adults, who cannot be greatly influenced, while our children remain uneducated.

It is not easy to explain to a kindergarten child, surrounded by parks full of garbage, that they should care for the environment. For children who see such scenes daily, this image becomes normal over time, which is one of the biggest problems in raising ecological awareness.

Children living in intensive urban environments are most affected by this problem.

We detected this problem at the Ciciban Kindergarten in Dušanovac, Belgrade. We contacted the kindergarten management and they confirmed our observations, explaining that the problem is even greater than it appears. Dragana Ilić Kocić, educator and head of the “Ciciban” branch of the Čika Jova Zmaj Voždovac Preschool Institution, sent us an official request for help after our conversation.

The kindergarten children not only spend time in a kindergarten surrounded by green areas full of garbage, but within the kindergarten itself, they have no trees to provide shade. This concerns a kindergarten of a large preschool institution that considers these minor problems, which rarely get addressed due to accumulated ongoing issues. The kindergarten staff asked us to help them because they have no budget for seedlings and no experts in their ranks from the field

The “Day for Ciciban” action was designed with the idea of solving ecological problems around the kindergarten, and thus helping the kindergarten children discover a more beautiful world.

Action Program:

Gathering of participants in front of the kindergarten at 10 AM.

Our team will manually dig large holes for planting 10 eight-year-old seedlings (holes 1 meter deep).

In the dug holes, children will plant trees that will provide them shade, with expert help from forestry engineers.

After planting, we continue the action by cleaning the park. For this part of the action, it would be ideal to have about 30 volunteers who could clean the park in 3 to 4 working hours.
During this time, forestry engineers will give each child one black pine seedling with soil in a biodegradable box, and explain how they can plant the seedling in front of their building, in their yard, or on their terrace.
